  • Description

This film, shot April 24 and 26, 1970, shows many different types of ships of the Russian Navy operating in the Norwegian Sea as part of a coordinated Soviet world-wide training exercise. The exercise, code-named OKEAN (Ocean) is based on a single operation plan coordinated and controlled by Fleet Headquarters in Moscow.

The Soviet forces taking part in the global exercise include submarines, surface ships, Naval Air Forces, and Marine units. The exercise areas include the Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, North Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan, Philippine Sea and the Mediterranean, Black and Baltic Seas.

The U.S. Navy cameraman photographed these Russian ships and submarines from a P-3 "Orion" reconnaissance aircraft flying out of Iceland over the Norwegian Sea.
