  • Description

TWO NEW BRIDGES OVER THE BLACK VOLTA RIVER, IN NORTHERN GHANA, BUILT AT A COST OF GBP610,000, WERE OFFICIALLY OPENED TO TRAFFIC ON SATURDAY (19 NOV) BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE REGIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE OF THE NORTHERN REGION, MR. J.M. KPORVIE.

THE BRIDGES, AT MORNO AND YAPEI, ARE DESIGNED TO BE AT LEAST TEN FEET ABOVE WATER WHEN THE RIVER IS AT ITS MAXIMUM FLOOD LEVEL. BEFORE THE BRIDGES WERE CONSTRUCTED THERE WERE FERRY ROUTES, BUT THESE CAUSED CONSIDERABLE INCONVENIENCE TO TRAVELLERS.

AT SATURDAY'S CEREMONY, WHICH WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY TRIBAL DANCERS, MR. KPORVIE ANNOUNCED THAT IT WAS HIS GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION TO CONSIDER A PROGRAMME OF SECONDARY ROADS, TO ENABLE TRANSPORT TO TRAVEL QUICKLY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
