The daily clean-up of the garbage begins in Istanbul in the early hours of the morning. More than three-thousand three-hundred employees of the Istanbul Municipality are occupied solely with clearing garbage from the streets. Modern equipment such as suction machinery and broom-equipped lorries are used. But in some areas, horse drawn carriages are pressed into service to clear the daily accumulations. Much of the collected rubbish is burnt, but some is buried. A cleaning tax on the population and funds from the Istanbul Municipality finance the massive operation.
