The Nigerian leader, General Gowon, who is on a state visit to Britain has had talks with the British Prime Minister, Mr. Heath. They discussed a range of international and African developments.
The meeting was seen as an opportunity for an exchange of views on outstanding issues affecting both countries. Officials said it would not be an occasion for any major policy decision.
After the talks, Mr. Heath gave a luncheon in General Gowon's honour at the Prime Minister official residence, Number 10 Downing Street. The General and his wife, Victoria, are staying at Buckingham Palace as guests of the Queen.
While General Gowon was engaged in matters of state, Mrs. Gowon, a qualified nurse, was taken on a tour of London's Hospital for Sick Children. Later she went on to the headquarters of the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade where she met the staff, some of whom had worked in Nigeria. She was also shown a film on the organisation's operations and took part in a group discussion on the work of the organisation. The discussion emphasised the part played by women.
