Background: In Sydney on Tuesday (19 December), the new Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Goff Whitlam, saw his new Labour cabinet sworn in.
The ministers had been elected the night before by the Labour caucus.
Mr. Whitlam abolished six departments in the Government structure. These were the ministries of the Interior, Environment, Aborigines and Arts, Education and Science, Trade and Industry, National Development and Social Services. These, said Mr. Whitlam, would be reshaped and brought together under new ministries.
There are 27 ministers in Mr. Whitlam's cabinet. They control 37 different departments -- including 16 newly-created sections.
