Background: The Soviet state airline Aeroflot is introducing tough security measures against hijacking. This was disclosed today (Friday) by a senior Civil Aviation Minster official. The crackdown follows the hijacking of tow Soviet aircraft to Turkey this month.

The latest hijacking occurred on October 27 when two students hijacked a Soviet plane over the Crimea and threatened to blow it up. Soon after the four-seater plane took off from Kerch in the Crimea for Krasnodar the students, Nikolai Ginlov, 21, and Viteli Pozdeyir, 20, overpowered the fourth occupant, a metal worker, and covered the pilot's head.

The 50-year-old pilot Alexander Menchikov fearing for his life, agreed to change course and landed the plane at the Turkish-American base of Ayancik, near the Turkish Black Sea port of Sinop.

The two hijackers said they had planned their escape for a long time, and the opportunity came when they boarded the plane, used as a form of inter-urban air taxi.

The Provincial Governor, Mr Ismail Dokuzoglu, said questioning of the hijackers was continuing.

On October 15, a Lithuanian father and his son killed a stewardess and seriously wounded another of the crew of an Aeroflot AN-24 aircraft before forcing the pilot to fly to Trabzon in Eastern Turkey.
