  • Description

Greece and Bulgaria, after a deadlock of six years, resumed economic talks at the Greek Foreign Ministry, Athens, Dec 5.

The negotiators: Mr. Gavrielov of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, and Mr. Simarios, Secretary of the Greek Foreign Ministry.

The main question to settle concerned Bulgaria's failure so far to pay Greece war reparations fixed by the peace treaty after World War Two at 45M dollars (about GBP16N). This was the main obstacle to resuming fuller diplomatic and commercial ties between the two countries.

The last attempt at a settlement - in 1954 - broke down over the advance of 6M dollars demanded by Greece.

Other complex differences on the agenda at these new talks were the settlement of a debt from the time of the exchange of populations in 1926, Bulgarian dues in war reparations dating from World War One, the return of Greek rolling stocks taken to Bulgaria during the Second World War and indemnities to Greek nationals for war damage and nationalisation.

Agreement on these problems, according to diplomatic sources, would enable Greece and Bulgaria to negotiate combined public works on the riverain frontier of the Evros to reclaim and protect valuable land on both sides of it.
