ONLY 47 OF THE FERRY'S 200 PASSENGERS AND CREW WERE RESCUED FROM THE AEGEAN SEA AFTER THE VESSEL WENT DOWN IN A STORM ON A VOYAGE FROM CRETE TO PIRAEUS, THE PORT OF ATHENS.

ABOUT 250 RELATIVES OF THE VICTIMS OF THE DISASTER CRAMMED THE COURTROOM WHILE HUNDREDS MORE PACKED THE CORRIDORS AND COURTYARDS. BEARDED CRETANS WORE BLACK SCARVES ROUND THEIR HEADS AND THE WOMEN WERE DRESSED IN BLACK.

STRINGENT SECURITY MEASURES WERE IN FORCE AND POLICE HAD TO MOVE IN WHEN CROWDS OF ANGRY BEREAVED STORMED INTO THE COURTROOM PAST COURT OFFICIALS IN AN ATTEMPT TO LAY HANDS ON THE PALE-FACED DEFENDANTS HUDDLED IN THE DOCK. ORDER WAS QUICKLY RESTORED AND THE INDICTMENT WAS READ OUT.

ISSUED AFTER 400 DAYS OF INVESTIGATIONS, THE INDICTMENT CHARGES THE DEFENDANTS WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR SHIPWRECK DUE TO NEGLIGENCE. THEY ARE ALSO ACCUSED OF MANSLAUGHTER, INFLICTION OF INJURY TO THE SURVIVORS, FAKING PUBLIC DOCUMENTS AND DERELICTION OF DUTY.

ABOUT 150 LAWYERS HAVE BEEN BRIEFED BY THE DEFENDANTS AND RELATIVES, AND THE PROSECUTION IS CALLING SOME 350 WITNESSES. THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT TWO MONTHS.

ACCORDING TO THE INDICTMENT, THE FERRY SANK WHEN A REFRIGERATOR LORRY SMASHED THROUGH A LOADING DOOR ALLOWING THE SEA TO POUR IN.
