TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 5: MRS NIXON: "I thank you for the very warm welcome and for all these wonderful people who are out here to see us land. I must say that the plane is just loaded not with people, but with things that I think you can use in this country. I also bring greetings and affection from the people of the United States who are saddened by the thought of the destruction here and the loss of life, and they want you to know that you're very much in their hearts, and that they will continue to help until this land is reconstructed and everything is rosy once again."

Background: Mrs Richard Nixon, wife of the United States President, arrived in Lima on Sunday (28th June) with two plane loads of supplies for the Victims of the Peruvian earthquake which devastated northern districts a month ago.

As Mrs Nixon left her aircraft and was greeted by the wife of the Peruvian President, a crowd of several thousand at the nearby airport terminal building gave her a loud and enthusiastic welcome. Television cameras covered the event.

In a brief speech to the assembled officials and crowd Mrs Nixon reaffirmed the United States intention to continue helping Peru until the country was reconstructed.
