  • Description

Heavy monsoon rains in two northern Indian states last week (24-28 July) caused immense damage and left thousands of people homeless. There's been no official confirmation, but reports from Uttar Pradesh State and Simla, the capital of the hill state of Himachel Pradesh say that hundreds of people have been drowned in floodwaters caused by the deluge.

??? swirling waters. In some villages, houses have collapsed and complete roofs have been washed away. Some villages have been completely submerged.

Damage to crops is enormous, and the Army has been asked to provide emergency relief, both in food and housing.

In the Himalayan foothills area, many villages have been left marooned. Giant boulders hurled down by landslides have cut many roads. Most rail communication in the area has been either officially halted or washed out by the floodwater.

SYNOPSIS: While the waters were still rising. some of the villagers tried to salvage what they could of their possessions. Their only way out of the flood downs was by bullock wagon. The debris-ridden floodwaters made the roads that were left completely impassable to other traffic.

On Thursday, an unconfirmed report said an unknown number of people had been killed in the Moradabad district. In simla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, one hundred and twenty people are feared washed away by the floodwaters.
