  • Description

The French warship 'Le Frendeur' arrived in Tema Harbour, Ghana's major pert on Friday (1 February) to begin a four-day goodwill visit in spite of demands by the Accra-based Pan-African Youth Movement to cancel the visit.

The warship and her sixty-four man crew were visiting the eighth country of their three-month tour of West Africa. The 325-ton 'Le Frendeur' is one of France's Le Fouguex Class of light patrol craft. Her armaments include torpedoes, anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weapons.

For Ghana, one of the few non-French speaking countries in West Africa, courtesy visits by French naval vessels are rare. 'Le Frondeur's arrival was marred by reports from nearby Guinea that French submarines had invaded her territorial waters. The Ghanian government had to resist calls from the Pan-African Youth Movement to show solidarity with Guinea by cancelling the French visit.
