  • Description

FIVE-THOUSAND BELGIAN WORKERS AT ANTWERP'S OIL INSTALLATIONS ARE AFFECTED BY A STRIKE OVER PAY INCREASES. THEIR UNION DISAGREES WITH THE LATEST GOVERNMENT PAY PROPOSALS AND HAS CALLED THE STRIKE FOR AN UNLIMITED PERIOD.

FOR THE MOMENT, THE OIL RESERVED ARE STILL SUFFICIENT TO MEET USUAL DEMANDS AND THE SITUATION IS SAID TO BE NOT ALARMING. SUPPLIES OF FUEL OIL TO PUBLIC SERVICES, SUCH AS HOSPITALS, ARE ASSURED.

AT THE ANTWERP INSTALLATIONS - PETROL AND FUEL OIL REFINING AND DISTRIBUTION PLANT - THE GIANT TANKS, LORRIES AND LIGHTERS ARE IDLE.

SOME STRIKE PICKETS ARE IN EVIDENCE BUT THERE WAS NO SIGN TODAY OF (TUESDAY) EXTRA POLICE ON DUTY.

FOR MOTORIST, SOME PRIVATE RATIONING HAS BEEN ORGANISED BY PETROL STATIONS, BUT MOST DISTRIBUTORS HAVE ENOUGH RESERVES FOR A WEEK.

THE STRIKE IS NOW IN ITS SECOND DAY AND FOLLOWS THE RECENT ANTWERP DOCKERS' STRIKE. PLEAS OF SUPPORT TO UNIONS IN EUROPE HAVE GONE OUT AND THE FRENCH OIL AND PETROL INDUSTRY UNIONS HAVE ALREADY REPLIED THEY ARE READY TO HALT SUPPLIES TO BELGIUM.
