  • Description

In kenya, at the Bamburi cement quarry, scientists have been working since 1971 on a unique experiment involving converting scarred land into a game park.

SYNOPSIS: This is what the quarried land looks like. Limestone is a basic constituent of cement, and cannot be quarried without leaving these scars. After twenty years of cement manufacture Bamburi had a giant quarry which was growing at the rate of 15 acres (6 hectares) a year. In 1971 Rene Haller, the company's farm manager and agronomist, started tree-planting and introduced fishponds.

Gradually animals were introduced, and the latest experiment is with eland. Rene Haller is hoping that these eland will breed to produce meat, and possibly milk. At the moment there are four in the park but by next January there should be some calves.

The latest plant being cultivated is a forest shrub which contains a new anticancer agent called Maytansine. It is being grown on a trial basis at the request of the United States Department of Agriculture.

The animal sanctuary is in the cement factory grounds. The animals have all been brought here by local people and are kept in cages until it's thought they are ready to roam in larger compounds. The game park itself currently covers an area of 18 acres (7 hectares) As well as the game, more than twenty experimental tanks containing a variety of fish have been introduced. These have attracted interest from universities around the world.

Rene Haller's methods have been to put in elements of nature t recreate a balanced environment. each animal and plant has a set purpose in his plan to rehabilitate what was barren quarry land.
