  • Description

Floods hit Cabimas, where oil wealth flows beyond the reach of the poor inhabitants.

Cabimas sits in a field of oil on Maracaibo Lake - It's a town of tiny huts and poverty in one of the richest oil nations of the
world. The Lake is dotted with oil rigs.

Four days of torrential rains flooded streams leading into the Lake spilling water into the town. The rain and river waters fall on the poor, swilled and wrecked their shack homes. With the meagre clothing they wore on their backs, thousands of families were driven out.

The torrential downpour heralded the rainy season. The health authorities warn that slow drainage will create a serious post-flood problem from stagnant water, sewage disposal and contaminated drinking water. Oil operations however are unaffected.
