  • Description

President Idi Amin on Saturday (25 January) led Republic Day celebrations marking Uganda's fourth anniversary of the 1971 military takeover and proclamation of the Second Republic.

The public celebrations, which began on Friday (24 January), were climaxed by the mass Republic Day rally on Saturday in kampala's Nakivubo Stadium. The day-long rally, which was attended by representatives of 22 other countries, was highlighted by a massive marchpast of students, soldiers, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. It also featured gymnastics, traditional dance and a massed band display.

In honour of the occasion, President Amin awarded 3,000 Ugandans with Republic Medals "for their good work and loyalty."
And in a address to the nation, the President stressed that self-reliance and hard work were needed to ensure that each able-bodied Ugandan could have his own plot of land on which to grow food and cash crops.

On the subject of international relations, President Amin said his goals were peace, international co-operation, understanding and assistance in this country's economic development.

It was in January, 1971, that General Amin led the military coup that ousted the government of President Milton Obote.
