Background: A crowd of about 300 people hired some 20 Buddhist nuns in a street march through Saigon on Monday (27 January), following a meeting of the two major opposition groups in South Vietnam.

The groups jointly called on President Nguyen Van Thieu to resign and make way for a new leader to be chosen by a general election.

The call was contained in a resolution passed after a debate marking the second anniversary of the Paris peace agreement. A crowd of about 1,500 people listened to the debate, which was held at the An ??? Pagoda, headquarters of the militant Buddhist ??? in South Vietnam.

The resolution was signed by Senator Vu Van Mau, the leader of the Buddhist-backed National Reconciliation Forces (NRF) and Father Tran Huu Thanh, the head of the Catholic-led People's Anti-Corruption Movement (PACM) and other opposition leaders.

Police used riot sticks to break up the demonstration after the meeting and the demonstrators fought back, throwing stones at police and ??? men in plain clothes. Two nuns and an old man were injured.

The crowd later dispersed, but the nuns stated a sit-in demonstration in one of the main streets of Saigon's twin city of Cholon. Police blocked all roads leading to the place where the nuns were sitting, a few hundred yards (metres) from An Quang Pagoda.
