    Background: ELEMENTS OF THE 2ND. REPUBLIC OF KOREA (ROK) BLUE DRAGON BRIGADE ENDED THE WEEK-LONG OPERATION WINNING DRAGON LAST MONDAY (7 OCTOBER). CENTRED APPROXIMATELY TWO TO THREE MILES (THREE TO FIVE KMS.) FROM THE CITY OF HOI AN, THE OPERATION WAS DESIGNED TO DENY THE VIET CONG THE USE OF THE MANY CAVES IN THE AREA FOR SUPPLY AND TROOP POSITIONS.

    STRONGEST CONTACT WITH VIET CONG TROOPS WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN AROUND THE DELTA OF THE SONG DE VONG RIVER, NEAR THE CITY OF HOI AN. THE AREA OF THE RIVER IS CHARACTERISED AS HAVING LARGE SWAMP REGIONS AND COUNTLESS CAVES. THE VIET CONG WERE SUSPECTED OF USING THE CAVES AS MEDICAL AID STATIONS AND FOOD SUPPLY DEPOTS.

    LAST SUNDAY AND MONDAY (6-7 OCTOBER), THE KOREAN MARINES MADE CONTACT WITH VIET CONG TROOPS IN THE DELTA AREA, COMING ASHORE FROM THEIR LANDING CRAFT TO ENGAGE THEM. ASSAULT VEHICLES, SMALL-ARMS AND FLAME-THROWERS WERE USED BY THE KOREANS.

    DURING THE OPERATION, THE ROK MARINES WERE SUPPORTED BY U.S. MARINE AIR STRIKES AND U.S. ARMY HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS, AS WELL AS NAVAL GUNFIRE FROM AMERICAN SHIPS STATIONED OFFSHORE.

    ELSEWHERE NEAR HOI AN, ROK MARINES ENGAGED IN OPERATION WINNING DRAGON AMBUSHED A 20-MAN VIET CONG FORCE LAST SUNDAY. THE KOREANS KILLED AN ESTIMATED 15 VIET CONG AND CLAIMED TO HAVE CAPTURED TWO CARBINES, TWO LIGHT MACHINE GUNS, ONE AK-47 RIFLE, ONE RADIO, 16 HAND-GRENADES AND VARIOUS ARTICLES OF PERSONAL FIELD EQUIPMENT.

    AT THE END OF OPERATION WINNING DRAGON, THE KOREANS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE KILLED 103 VIET CONG AND CAPTURED 8 PEOPLE. THE ROK MARINES CLAIMED TO HAVE DESTROYED 189 CAVES AND BUNKERS, ABOUT 1,084 FEET (300 M.) OF TRENCHES AND 31 SAMPANS.

    ITEMS CAPTURED ARE SAID TO HAVE INCLUDED SEVEN GAS MASKS, 5,000 ROUNDS OF SMALL-ARMS AMMUNITION AND MORE THAN 12 TONS OF RICE.

    FIVE ROK MARINES WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN OPERATION WINNING DRAGON AND 19 WOUNDED.
