  • Description

THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, TODAY (MONDAY) DISCUSSED HIS COUNTRY'S AIR DEFENCE NEEDS. SPEAKING AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN LONDON, THE TUNKU SAID THAT BECAUSE OF THE PHILIPPINES' CLAIM OVER SABAH, MALAYSIA NEEDED EFFECTIVE MILITARY AIRCRAFT, PARTICULARLY IN VIEW OF BRITAIN'S PROJECTED WITHDRAWAL FROM THE FAR EAST.

THE TUNKU SAID THAT MALAYSIA HAD BEEN OFFERED SUPERSONIC BRITISH LIGHTNING FIGHTER-BOMBERS WHICH HE THOUGHT WERE TOO SOPHISTICATED AND REFURBISHED HAWKER HUNTERS WHICH WERE OUT OF DAYS. HE SAID THAT HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE HARRIER "JUMP-JET" AIRCRAFT, BUT COULD NOT AFFORD TO WAIT UNTIL 1971 WHEN BRITAIN COULD BEGIN SUPPLYING THEM.
