Background: Mrs. Pat Nixon took her husband July 28 to a breakfast given by a group of Republica ladies, and there got a staggering ovation. After the presentation of a heart-shaped bouquet of Chrysanthemums, a young republican lady got up and led the singing of the song expected to be used during the forthcoming election campaign with the slogan "Pat for First Lady". These are the words that were sung to the music of "Bicycle Made for Two.":
"Pattie, Pattie, nobody else will do. None so snappy from any point of view. We want Pat for First Lady, Not Jackie, Ann or Sadie. Cause Pat's so sweet She can't be beat, She's our ideal through and through."
Richard Nixon, who now has the Republican nomination for the Presidency, received a gold medal, then waxing forthright as he wooed the feminine vote, told the Republican ladies that "the man does the talking but the woman does the work."
At the Ladies' sing-song he appeared somewhat embarrassed and overwhelmed by the sentimental female enthusiasm of the occasion.
