  • Description

84-YEAR-OLD GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR -- ADMITTED TO A WASHINGTON HOSPITAL ON TUESDAY (MARCH 3) SUFFERING FROM A "MODERATELY SEVERE JAUNDICE" -- HAS FOR THE LAST HALF CENTURY BEEN ONE OF AMERICA'S FOREMOST MILITARY MEN. THE 30 YEARS HE SERVED AS A GENERAL IS MORE THAN MANY PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERS SERVE IN THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY CAREER.

VISNEWS LIBRARY FILM SHOWS HIM FIRST IN 1931 WATCHING, AS A GUEST, FRENCH ARMY MANOEUVRES AT RHEIMS. HE WAS THEN 51: THE PREVIOUS YEAR HAVING BECOME, AT 50, THE YOUNGEST CHIEF OF STAFF THE U.S. ARMY HAS EVER HAD.

AN OBSERVER OF THE RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR, 1904-5, AND AN OUTSTANDING AMERICAN SOLDIER OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, HE BECAME A FIGURE OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE AFTER HIS HEROIC DEFENCE OF THE PHILIPPINES AGAINST THE JAPANESE, FOLLOWING THEIR 1941 ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOUR. AFTER DESPERATE BATTLES TO HOLD FIRST BATAAN, AND THEN THE ISLAND OF CORREGIDOR, HE OBEYED PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT'S ORDER AND ESCAPED TO AUSTRALIA IN FEBRUARY, 1942.

FOLLOWING AN ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY WHICH INCLUDED STAGES BY PLANE AND OPEN BOAT HE ARRIVED SAFELY. BUT HE DID NOT FORGET HIS PROMISE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES - "I WILL RETURN", AND IN 1942, AS SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA, HE BEGAN THE LONG ROAD BACK.

PLANNING THE ALLIED WAR EFFORT HE ADVANCED FROM ONE ISLAND STEPPING-STONE TO THE NEXT, UNTIL 1944 WHEN, AT THE HEAD OF HIS SOLDIERS, HE WADED ASHORE ON THE PHILIPPINE BEACHES. FIGHTING HIS WAY ACROSS THE ISLANDS HE AT LAST ENTERED THE CAPITAL, MANILA, WHICH HIS FATHER HAD CAPTURED DURING THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR, IN 1898.

AFTER THE PHILIPPINES...IWO JAMA, THE ATOMIC BOMB ATTACKS, THEN -- IN TOKYO BAY, ABOARD THE AMERICAN BATTLESHIP "MISSOURI", THE FORMAL JAPANESE SURRENDER, RECEIVED BY MACARTHUR ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1945. STAYING IN JAPAN FOR FIVE YEARS AS COMMANDER OF THE ALLIED OCCUPATION FORCES, MACARTHUR REDUCED THE EMPEROR'S AUTOCRATIC POWERS.

WITHOUT HIS "DE-DEIFICATION" OF THE "SON OF HEAVEN" IT WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE FOR CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO AND HIS TWO SISTERS TO HAVE BEEN GAZED UPON BY COMMON PEOPLE, MUCH LESS SIT AND ENJOY A 'HOT DOG' WHILE WATCHING A HORSE SHOW IN TOKYO IN 1949. MACARTHUR ENCOURAGED TRADE UNIONS, ENGINEERED THE ACCEPTANCE OF A NEW CONSTITUTION, AND GAVE JAPANESE WOMEN THE VOTE.

AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE 1950 KOREAN WAR, HE WAS RECALLED TO ACTIVE SERVICE. REPELLING NORTH KOREAN FORCES FROM TERRITORY THEY HAD TAKEN, HE RE-OCCUPIED SEOUL, THE SOUTH KOREAN CAPITAL, AND RE-INSTATED PRESIDENT SYNGMAN RHEE. HE CONTINUED TO COMMAND UNITED NATIONS TROOPS UNTIL 1951, WHEN PRESIDENT TRUMAN RECALLED HIM BECAUSE OF DIFFERENCES IN STRATEGIC POLICY. BUT HIS PLACE AS A GREAT AMERICAN HERO WAS ASSURED.

FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO WASHINGTON VAST CROWDS GAVE HIM A HERO'S WELCOME. HIS DISMISSAL AROUSED A STORM OF CONTROVERSY ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES. PRESIDENT TRUMAN WAS VIOLENTLY CRITICISED FOR HIS ACTION, AND THERE WAS EVEN TALK OF IMPEACHING HIM. THE GENERAL'S HOMECOMING WAS ATTENDED BY SCENES OF EXTRAORDINARY ENTHUSIASM, THE CLIMAX BEING REACHED WHEN HE ADDRESSED A JOINT MEETING OF CONGRESS.

IN 1961 -- A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY, BACK TO MANILA TO REVIEW A BIG PARADE MARKING THE 15TH YEAR OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE FROM THE UNITED STATES. AND HIS MESSAGE TO THE CROWD, PARAPHRASING HIS FAMOUS WARTIME PLEDGE: "I HAVE RETURNED".

AND, IN THE SAME YEAR, A MEETING WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY. THIS TOOK PLACE IN MACARTHUR'S SUITE AT THE EXCLUSIVE WALDORF TOWERS IN NEW YORK'S PARK AVENUE. THERE THE GENERAL WAS LIVING IN SECLUSION ON HIS RETIREMENT SALARY OF 21,000 DOLLARS, PLUS 68,000 DOLLARS HE DREW AS CHAIRMAN OF A BIG CORPORATION. NOW, AT 84 -- AND A LEGEND IN HIS OWN LIFETIME -- HE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO WASHINGTON AND ADMITTED TO THE WALTER REED ARMY HOSPITAL. THE LATEST MEDICAL BULLETIN SAID TEST WERE BEING CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF HIS AUDIENCE.
