    THEIR THREE-DAY MEETING IS TO DISCUSS PROPOSALS WORKED OUT EARLIER THIS MONTH BY THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE GENERAL AGREEMENT OF TARIFFS AND TRADE (GATT), WHICH MAKES RULES FOR ABOUT FOUR-FIFTHS OF WORLD TRADE.

    THOUGH DETAILS OF THE FUTURE GATT WORK PROGRAMME REMAIN TO BE SETTLED, IT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN LINE WITH PROPOSALS OUTLINED BY MR. ERIC WYNDHAM WHITE, THE RETIRING GATT GENERAL DIRECTOR, WHO ADVOCATES GRADUALLY EASING OR ABOLISHING REMAINING TARIFFS AND OTHER BARRIERS, AND A NEW ATTEMPT TO LIBERALISE TRADE IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS.

    MR. WILLIAM M. ROTH, PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR TRADE NEGOTIATIONS, TOLD REPORTERS IN GENEVA TODAY HE HOPED THE PRESENT HIGH-LEVEL TALKS WOULD ACHIEVE SOME PROGRESS IN FORMULATION A NEW GATT ACTION PROGRAMME.
