  • Description

The United States reportedly will ask the United Nations to call off its proposed $1,100,000 aid to help build an agricultural experimental station in Cuba.

American sources say U.N.Ambassador Adlai Stevenson is under orders to demand that the aid plan, approved in May, 1961, be scrapped. The U.S.puts up 40 per cent of the special fund, from which the aid money would come.

The U.S.position is that the project cannot be carried out because many Cuban agricultural technicians are fleeing Cuba. The U.S.also says the food situation in Cuba is the worst in years.

This privation is said to be causing many Cubans to flee to the U.S.Last weekend, a group of six men tried it.But their small boat hit rough seas around the Florida Keys. They abandoned their sinking boat and found shelter on a lighthouse reef. After considerable difficulty, the Coast Guard was able to rescue the Cubans...who said another group of 25 Cubans fled in another small boat earlier in the week, but apparently did not survive the choppy and icy seas.
