Background: Talks in Bucharest between Sudan's President Jaafar E1-Nimeiry and Rumania's President Nicolae Ceausescu resulted in a plan to improve navigation of the Nile. President Nimeiry was given a state welcome and was greeted by President Ceausescu at Otopeni airport near Bucharest on Monday (2 April).
Details of the navigation project were disclosed by Sudanese officials in Bucharest as President Nimeiry and Ceausescu were in the first round of official talks. The Sudanese officials said agreement had also been reached on the formation of committees to further political, economic and cultural co-operation. The navigation improvements, to be made with the assistance of Rumanian technology, are aimed at speeding up passenger and freight transportation along the river.
During the visit, President Nimeiry attacked the world's powerful industrial states for not living up to their responsibilities towards developing nations. The president said the rich were getting richer and the poor, poorer.
Sudan has maintained friendly links with Rumanis despite a general slackening of relations with Communist countries after an attempted coup in Khartoum two years ago. After the coup attempt, several Communists were executed in Sudan.
