Background: Chris Brasher, who helped pace Roger Bannister to the
first sub-four minute mile and was also co-founder of the
London marathon, has died at the age of 74.


In May 1954 the bespectacled Brasher, who later won an
Olympic gold medal in the 1956 Olympic Games, took the lead in
a race in Oxford, England.

He held it for half a mile before giving way to
Christopher Chataway who was in turn passed by Roger
Bannister. Sporting history was made shortly after as
Bannister crossed the finish line in three minutes 59.4
seconds to break the four minute barrier for the first time.

"Chris was gallant and brave right to the end, he had won
so many battles in his life," Bannister said on Friday
(February 28) after the announcement of Brasher's death.

"We had more than 50 years of friendship, (contemporary
Chris) Chataway, Brasher and I, and we mourn him and grieve
for his family.

"He did so much for Britain, from his incomparable Olympic
gold medal to founding the London Marathon and preserving
tracts of countryside.

"We will miss him," he said.

Two years after that Oxford race Brasher won the Olympic
3,000 metres steeplechase title in Melbourne after winning an
appeal against disqualification for impeding another athlete.

Inspired by the success of the New York marathon, Brasher
co-founded the London marathon which was first run in 1981. In
1994 Bannister waved the flag to start the London Marathon,
and Bannister, Chataway and Brasher were on hand to watch the
winners at the finish.

Brasher was also a successful journalist and became sports
editor of a British national newspaper.
