    PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA THIS WEEK OPENED IN NAIROBI THE FIRSTS OF A SERIES OF ANNUAL CONFERENCES CALLED THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN DIALOGUES. THE FOUR-DAY CONFERENCE, ATTENDED BY 40 DISTINGUISHED AMERICANS AND AFRICANS IS DISCUSSING "MYTHS AND REALITIES IN AFRICAN - AMERICAN UNDERSTANDING" AND "PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT".

    FOURTEEN AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE REPRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE, WHICH HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF NEW YORK UNDER A THREE-YEAR GRANT OF 175,000 DOLLARS (73,000 STERLING) FROM THE FORD FOUNDATION, IT'S AIM IS TO PROMOTE BETTER UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN AFRICA AND AMERICA AND TO IMPROVE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THEM. PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY A DIRECTING COMMITTEE TO REFLECT A WIDE RANGE OF VIEWS. THEY WILL ACT AS INDIVIDUALS RATHER THAN REPRESENTATIVES OF GOVERNMENTS OR PRIVATE GROUPS.

    THE CO-CHAIRMAN OF THE DIRECTING COMMITTEE ARE MR. GEORGE LINDSAY, A NEW YORK LAWYER, AND MR. JOSEPH MURUMBI, A MEMBER OF THE KENYAN PARLIAMENT. AMONG THE DELEGATION FROM SOMALIA IS THEIR PRIME MINISTER, MOHAMMED IBRAHIM EGAL.
