    British European Airways today August 7th in London announced its decision to buy Lockheed L-1011 TriStars, the initial purchase of six with spare parts valued at approximately $150 million.

    Lockheed Board Chairman Daniel J. Haughton called it "the single most significant overseas order" in the company's commercial aircraft programs during the past twenty-five years
    On the same day, British Minister for Aerospace Michael Heseltine announced the government's acceptance of a Rolls-Royce proposal to develop a more powerful engine for a longer range TriStar.

    BEA Chairman Henry Marking also announced the airline's option for an additional six TriStars.

    Haughton called the BEA order, achieved after three years of "most intense competition,"....not only a breakthrough to additional world markets"....but "a springboard for our new TriStar extended range version."
    The Lockheed Board Chairman explained that, "Over the years, BEA's operations have proved influential throughout the european and Mediterranean areas where a number of potential TriStar customers are headquartered."
    With BEA's decision today, Lockheed's TriStar orders-- including first and second buys and letters of intent--now total 164, (110 first and 54 seconds buys).
