Background: A VAST AIR AND SEA SEARCH TODAY (SUNDAY) FAILED TO FIND ANY TRACE OF THE FRENCH SUBMARINE MINERVE, OR ANY EXPLANATION FOR ITS DISAPPEARANCE. CAPTAIN PIERRE EMEURY, COMMANDER OF THE FIRST FRENCH SUBMARINE SQUADRON, TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN TOULON: "WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANY VALID INDICATION OF THE MINERVE'S WHEREABOUTS." CAPTAIN EMEURY SAID SEVERAL OIL PATCHES HAD BEEN SPOTTED IN THE AREA, BUT THEY WERE TOO NUMEROUS AND TOO WIDESPREAD TO BE TAKEN AS AN INDICATION OF THE SUBMARINE'S WHEREABOUTS.

THIRTY NAVAL VESSELS AND A DOZEN HELICOPTER SEARCH AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN COMBING THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN AREA WHERE THE 52 MAN MINERVE WAS OPERATING, 20 MILES (32 KMS) SOUTH OF TOULON, SINCE THE VESSEL FAILED TO RETURN THERE LAST NIGHT.

THE MINERVE, WHICH WAS ACTING AS A DECOY IN SUBMARINE SEARCH MANOEUVRES, BROKE OFF OPERATION YESTERDAY WHEN WEATHER BECAME TOO BAD FOR ITS ESCORT AIRCRAFT. IT WAS ORDERED TO MAKE ITS OWN WAY BACK TO PORT.

CAPTAIN EMEURY SAID THE 1,040 TON MINERVE, ONE OF FRANCE'S TEN DAPHNE CLASS HIGH PERFORMANCE VESSELS, COULD ONLY SIGNAL DISTRESS BY RISING NEAR THE SURFACE TO HOIST A RADIO AERIAL OR FIRE FLARES.

(MEANWHILE 1500 MILES (2,400 KMS) TO THE EAST THE SEARCH IS STILL GOING ON FOR THE ISRAELI SUBMARINE DAKAR WHICH HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE THURSDAY WITH A CREW OF 69.)
