  • Description

CHURCH AUTHORITIES INSTITUTED A STRICT CLAMP-DOWN ON NEWS ACTIVITIES AT THE VATICAN TODAY (FRIDAY) AS ROME PREPARED FOR THE OPERATION ON POPE PAUL, EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE EARLY TOMORROW.

THERE IS APPARENTLY FEAR THAT THE PRESS MIGHT OBTAIN UNAUTHORISED INFORMATION ON THE OPERATION, WHICH IS BELIEVED TO BE FOR REMOVAL OF THE PROSTRATE GLAND. THE POPE HAS ASKED FOR 'STRICTEST DISCRETION' THROUGHOUT THE OPERATION.

BUT PREPARATIONS CONTINUE TO INDICATE THAT TOMORROW IS THE DAY SELECTED. MANY OF THE VATICAN STAFF HAVE BEEN CALLED FOR EARLY DUTY TOMORROW, APPARENTLY IN ANTICIPATION. THE OPERATION WILL TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE VATICAN PALACE, AND SHOULD LAST ABOUT 40 MINUTES. LAST NIGHT POPE PAUL MET HIS CHIEF AIDES IN AN APPARENT ATTEMPT TO DAMP DOWN ANXIETY AMONG THE PEOPLE. THERE WILL BE NO ANNOUNCEMENT BEFORE THE OPERATION - ONLY A COMMUNIQUE AFTERWARDS.
