  • Description

GEORGETOWN, THE CAPITAL OF BRITISH GUIANA, WAS A BLAZE OF COLOUR AND DECORATIONS FOR THE VISIT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. HUNDREDS HAD TOILED TO DRESS UP THE CAPITAL IN ITS BEST FINERY FOR THE FIRST-EVER VISIT OF A REIGNING MONARCH.

HALF A MILLION DECORATIVE LIGHTS WERE STRUNG ACROSS STREETS AND BUILDINGS TO WELCOME THE ROYAL COUPLE.

HUGE BANNERS, BEARING MESSAGES LIKE "LONG LIVE THE QUEEN" WERE HUNG IN ALL PARTS OF THE CITY..
THE PROFUSION OF DECORATIONS GAVE NO HINT OF THE UNDERLYING POLITICAL TENSIONS THAT THE VISIT HAD BUILT UP. JUST BEFORE THE COUPLE WERE DUE TO ARRIVE, MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITION PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY (P.P.P.) WERE UNDER ORDERS TO BOYCOTT CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE VISIT.
