  • Description

An estimated 3,000 Greek Cypriot children, mostly from secondary schools, thronged the gardens in front of the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Wednesday (16 February) to demonstrate support for the island's leader Archbishop Makarios.

The rally followed similar gatherings by villagers who had gone to the capital in busloads on Tuesday (15 February) to cheer the President over his dispute with the Greek Government in which he rejected proposals for a reshuffle in his cabinet.

SYNOPSIS: Over the last few months Greek Cypriots have paraded the streets supporting General Grivas, a former Eoka guerrilla leader now allegedly planning an under-ground movement to topple Archbishop Makarios. But the current quarrel over calls for a Government of national unity and suggestions for placing arms in the custody of the United Nations peace force has caused the majority of Greeks to rally round their Head of State.
