Background: Every year at Camogli, a small Italian town near Genoa, a big Fish Festival is held. People arrive from all over the nearby countryside to enjoy the fried fish, given away free. This year, about 70 tons of fish was fried in the huge vats set up near the harbour.

The custom is not an ancient tradition - but dates only since World War Two.

There are tow accounts of its origin. According to one, the Camogli fishermen - prohibited from fishing during the German occupation - went out on an unauthorized expedition one night and returned with a bumper catch, which they then gave away to the hungry townspeople, deprived of fish, their staple diet.

Another story is that Camogli had a reputation for meanness, which gave rise to a free-for-all fish fiesta, as a public token by the town of its generosity.

Whether the origin way to remove a slur or was a result of war-time restrictions, local people and visitors are all grateful to Camogli's fishermen once a year on May 6th.
