Dr. Michael E. De Bakey, who performed a successful operation on the Duke of Windsor?

  • Description

Dr. Michael E. De Bakey, who performed a successful operation on the Duke of Windsor at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas (southwest USA) Wednesday (16 December) met with newsmen afterward to describe and discuss the operation.

The surgeon said the Duke was recovering satisfactorily after the removal of an abdominal aneurysm (ballooning of an artery) which he said was "quite serious". The operation on the 70-year-old Duke lasted 67 minutes. A complete recovery is expected.

A section of dacron tubing was grafted onto the artery to replace the weakened section. Dr. De Bakey exhibited such a tubing to the newsmen.

Immediately after the operation, Dr. DeBakey went to the $120 a day suite reserved for the Duke's party and notified the Duchess that the surgery was successful. Then he helped Peter Hope, British consul General at Houston to compose a cable reporting the outcome to Queen Elizabeth
