Designed by the late Sir Sydney Camm, the prototype Hurricane first flew in November 1935. After handling trials, production began in 1936, and the first of these aircraft flew in October 1937. The production aircraft, which won such fame during the Battle of Britain, were fitted with all-metal wings and eight Browning guns. Later versions had more guns fitted and were also fitted with bombs. A total of 14,000 Hurricanes were built. They were powered by Rolls Royce Merlin engines, and had a speed of over 300 m.p.h. Twice as many Hurricanes as Spitfires were in service at the time of the Battle of Britain.
