  • Description

As of Tuesday (17 December), a day after the National Election, it appears that Guyanan Prime Minister Forbes Burnham and his government will be returned to office.

Prime Minister Burnham's People's National Congress pushed into a substantial lead with more than a quarter of the vote counted. A computer predicts Mr. Burnham's party will win a majority of 28 seats in the 53 seat National Assembly. This would be one more than the Prime Minister held when Parliament was dissolved. The same prediction gave Dr. Cheddi Jagan's Peoples Progressive Party 20 seats, the United Front Party (former partners in the coalition government three seats, and two seats undecided.

Prime Minister Burnham's party appeared to be getting strong support among new voters and showed surprising strength in areas where the population is largely of East Indian origin. His opponent, Dr. Jagan, is a member of this ethnic group, and his party has always been considered the East Indian party.

In 1964, Dr. Jagan won 46 per cent of the vote and Mr. Burnham 40 per cent. To keep Dr. Jagan out of office, Mr. Burnham's party and a conservative group called United Force fromed a majority coalition. Two months ago, the coalition fell apart and Mr. Burnham decided to call a new election.
