  • Description

South African Army troops stepped up exercises in Windhoek, South West Africa, on Tuesday (24 February) as about 400 war refugees were flown into government run transit camps.

It is expected that some 6,000 refugees will be transhipped to Portugal during a week long operation, while another 3,000 non-Portuguese will remain in the Tour camps the South African government has established near the Angola border in South West Africa (Namibia)
The South African government says it is demonstrating "humani tarianism, regardless of race, creed or colour".

Meanwhile, military operations in the area have taken new significance, since the civil war in Angola.

Battle camps have been set up along the border....manoeuvres are being carried out in rugged jungle terrain.

South Africa's troop deployment in the vicinity is unknown, but is generally believed to be strong.

Troops supervise the refugee camps, and ferry supplies to families stranded in the transit stations.
