  • Description

Vietnam war veterans vigorously protested yesterday (Friday) at the latest troops withdrawals announced by President Nixon. Fearing that these new withdrawals of 45,000 men will worsen an already critical unemployment situation, jobless veterans in New York staged their own spontaneous demonstration. Scores of former troops were being interviewed for jobs at a Manhattan armoury. Others, opposed to the "jobs fair", chanted outside and called for better and increased employment opportunities.

SYNOPSIS: The problem of employing Vietnam war veterans in the United States became more critical on friday. President Nixon announced the recall of another forty-five thousand troops and the end of the U.S. combat role in the war. In New York, meantime, scores of Veterans visited a Manhattan armoury looking for a employment at a jobs fair. Several dozen companies and organisations had stands and representatives at the fair. But not all veterans were enthusiastic about the jobs fair.

Outside, a hundred or more veterans protested against the fair -- and against the likelihood of the unemployment situation worsening as a result of the latest troop withdrawals.

The American Servicemen's Union handed out pamphlet a claiming that the jobs fair is a jobs hoax. It's calling for an end to racial and political discrimination at such fairs. It also wants details of all jobs to be made public because it disputes the State Employment Service claim that there are four-thousand jobs currently available for servicemen in New York. The Servicemen's Union and other veterans organisations are sceptical because they claim over three-thousand veterans are collecting unemployment benefits in New York City alone.

Under the latest troop recall, the withdrawals are being increased from over fourteen-thousand to over twenty-two-thousand men a month. The size and timing of the next pullback of troops will be announced before february.
