Background: BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS (BEA) TONIGHT (FRIDAY) DISMISSED 300 PORTERS WHOSE UNOFFICIAL STRIKE CAUSED CHAOS AMONG WHITSUN HOLIDAYMAKERS AT LONDON AIRPORT. BY EARLY EVENING BEA ANNOUNCED IT HAD CANCELLED ALL SERVICES FOR THE DAY. THIS MEANT HALTING 93 FLIGHTS AND STRANDING 8,000 PASSENGERS.

THE TROUBLE BEGAN IN THE MORNING AT WEST LONDON AIR TERMINAL, THE PLACE WHERE PASSENGERS GATHER TO BE TAKEN BY COACH TO THE AIRPORT. ABOUT 150 BEA PORTERS CAME OUT ON STRIKE OVER A NEW THREE-YEAR PAY DEAL WHICH THE TRADE UNIONS HAD NEGOTIATED. SIMILAR AGREEMENTS HAD ALREADY BEEN MADE WITH OTHER BEA STAFF.

WITH NO PORTERS AVAILABLE TO LOAD PASSENGERS' LUGGAGE INTO BUSES TO THE AIRPORT, BEA TOLD PASSENGERS TO MAKE THEIR OWN WAY THERE. NORMALLY, NEARLY HALF BEA'S PASSENGERS CHECK IN AT WEST LONDON AIR TERMINAL AND GO DIRECT TO THEIR PLANES WHEN THE COACH ARRIVES AT THE AIRPORT.

MANY PASSENGERS DECIDED TO GET TO THE AIRPORT BY TAXI, AND PRICES VARIED FROM THIRTY SHILLINGS TO GBP3-10-0 FOR THE 17-MILE (27 KILOMETRE) DRIVE. BUT THERE WAS NO SHORTAGE OF CUSTOMERS. (ON THE AIRPORT COACH THE FARE IS FIVE SHILLINGS).

THE TAXIS ADDED TO THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION AT LONDON AIRPORT. AND THEN THE BAGGAGE LOADERS AT THE AIRPORT ITSELF - THE MEN WHO ACTUALLY PUT THE LUGGAGE ON THE AIRCRAFT - DECIDED TO JOIN THE STRIKE.

ALL DAY LONG, THOUSANDS OF DELAYED PASSENGERS JAMMED THE AIRPORT'S DEPARTURE LOUNGES, LUGGAGE PILED HIGH, CHILDREN CRYING, TEMPERS FRAYING. AMONG THEM WAS MR. GUNTER, THE MINISTER OF LABOUR, WHO SAID THE STRIKERS' ACTION WAS "JUST SHEER VICIOUSNESS".

MATTERS CAME TO A HEAD IN THE EVENING WHEN BEA DISMISSED THE 300 STRIKERS. MR. ANTHONY MILWARD, THE BEA CHAIRMAN, SAID HE WAS FACED WITH INDUSTRIAL ANARCHY. MR. JOHN COUSINS, SON OF THE MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY, AND DISTRICT OFFICER OF THE TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION, SAID THE DISMISSALS WERE "IRRESPONSIBLE". HE SAID THE MEN WOULD HAVE BEEN BACK AT WORK BY 6 P.M. IF THE NOTICES HAD BEEN WITHDRAWN.
