28-year-old Nicolette Milnes-Walker became the first woman to sail the Atlantic Ocean alone and non-stop. She arrived in Newport on Monday (26 July) -- 44 days after leaving Wales. The 3,500 mile crossing ended in a dead calm, and her 30-foot (9 metre) sloop, Aziz, was towed the last 11 miles into Newport by two U.S. Coast Guard boats.
Miss Milnes-Walker was greeted by her parents and a crowd of well-wishers. Although she emerged from the voyage in good health and spirits, she said her future plans definitely would not include another solo trip across the Atlantic.
A research psychologist at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, she became interested in sailing last year, and then left her job to prepare for the voyage.
