WEST BERLIN HAS A NEW SQUARE - THE JOHN F.KENNEDY-PLATZ.MORE THAN 250,000 WEST BERLINERS STOOD SILENTLY IN AND ABOUT THE SQUARE WHEN IT WAS RENAMED AFTER THE DEAD PRESIDENT LAST NIGHT (MONDAY.)
IN THE SAME SQUARE, FORMERLY THE RUDOLF WILDE-PLATZ, OUTSIDE THE CITY HALL, THEY HAD CHEERED HIM HOARSE SIX MONTHS AGO WHEN HE SAID, IN GERMAN: "I AM A BERLINER."
AN HONOUR GUARD OF U.S.SERVICEMEN AND WEST BERLIN POLICEMEN FLANKED THE BLACK-DRAPED ROSTRUM, FROM WHICH HERR HEINRICH, DEPUTY MAYOR, OFFICIALLY RENAMED THE SQUARE.

HERR HEINRICH, STANDING IN FOR MAYOR WILLY BRANDT WHO WAS IN WASHINGTON FOR THE FUNERAL, SAID PRESIDENT KENNEDY HAD BEEN A SYMBOL OF SECURITY FOR PEOPLE ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE BERLIN WALL, AND, FOR PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE, A "SYMBOL OF THEIR HOPES."
A HUGE PORTRAIT OF THE DEAD PRESIDENT WAS FIXED ABOVE THE BALCONY FROM WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN SIX MONTHS AGO, AND HANGING FROM IT WERE THE STARS AND STRIPES AND THE WEST GERMAN AND WEST BERLIN FLAGS.

STREET LAMPS WERE DIMMED AS TWO U.S.ARMY BUGLERS SOUNDED U.S., TOLLED IN THE HALL'S TOWER.
