  • Description

Troops loyal to Bolivia new Left-wing president, General Torrez, rallied behind him today (Friday) to stem a Right-wing revolt by a 500-man regiment of the Bolivian army. General Torrez seized power in a near bloodless coup two days ago. After the attempted Rightist counter-coup, General Torrez warned he would tolerate no opposition.

General Torrez, who is backed by most of the armed forces, students and workers' organisations, declared himself revolutionary president on Tuesday an later ousted a rival three-man Right-wing junta which had proclaimed itself in power after President Alfredo Ovando Candia resigned.

Troops loyal to Torrez have taken up strategic positions throughout La Paz. The situation in Bolivia after the coup and counter-coup is confused, but it's reported there are pockets of resistance against both Left-wing and Right-wing contenders for power. The leader of the Rightist faction, Colonel Miguel Montana claims to have support from another Bolivian garrison.
