The fourth unarmed British Civilian to be killed last week by EOKA, Mr. Wilfred Benson, 34, was shot Friday outside the Ottoman Bank in Nicosia, where he was sub-manager. A youth with a nine millimetre pistol is reported to have shot at him six times.
The whole of the area in which the murder took place was immediately cordoned off, and men and women were searched. Passengers of cars were searched and a number held for questioning.
The killing took place after Mr. Benson left the bank at 2 p.m. his usual hour. He had crossed the road and got into the driving seat of his small car when he was shot from behind - the ignition key was still in his hand when he was found.
Though the street was full of Greek Cypriots at the time, none would report having seen the killer. In fact they hung around on balconies overlooking the scene as senior police officials and army officers arrived to investigate. The only reporting witnesses were Turkish Cypriots.
Mrs. Benson gave birth to a two month premature baby boy only a week ago. The boy named Nigel is still in hospital.
