Background: More than 120 people held hostage in a hi-jacked Aerotal Colombia aircraft were freed in a gun battle between troops and the left-wing guerrillas holding the captives, at Cali airport in Colombia. Earlier, when the plane landed at Bogota airport after being seized while on a domestic flight to the south-western city of Pereira, the guerrillas threatened to blow it up unless they were given a flight chart for Central America. Troops surrounded the aircraft as it stood on the tarmac at Bogota. The 128 hostages on board were eventually freed at Cali, after troops shot out the aircraft's tyres and riddled the fuel tank with bullets. The guerrillas had earlier freed 86 of the captives, when the plane first stopped for re-fuelling.
