  • Description

President Tito of Yugoslavia left New York Oct 4, the second visiting Head of State to depart for home.

Because of confused press arrangements as the President prepared to go aboard the Italian liner 'Leonardo da Vinci' his final prepared statement could not be heard by newsmen.

In a later press conference called on the liner, President Tito said he left in a less optimistic mood than when he arrived in New York two weeks ago. "On the other hand" he added, "I have noted in the Assembly the very encouraging fact that the non-aligned forces are becoming ever more numerous, united, and conscious of the dangers threatening mankind as a result of the further deterioration of the international atmosphere."
The impression President Tito leaves behind in New York is one of quite dignity. His personal conduct at all times was of the stateliest - contrasting vividly with the roisterous behaviour of either Fidel Castro, or Nikita Khrushchev. He seemed less hemmed in by security arrangements (presumably by request) and appeared to have enjoyed the 'visiting' part of his stay, with walks in Central Park, and several other moments of relaxation.
