  • Description

GHANA IS STRENGTHENING ITS FISHERY PROTECTION AND WATER-POLICING OPERATION BY ADDING MORE PATROL BOATS TO ITS FLEET. THE NEW BOATS WILL JOIN THE EXISTING FLEET TO GO INTO ACTION AGAINST SMUGGLERS, GUN-RUNNERS AND POACHING FISHING BOATS.

RECENTLY THE NEW BOATS WERE INSPECTED BY COMMANDER C.M. BAGGULEY OF THE GHANAIAN NAVY. THEY WERE BLESSED BY THE REVEREND MATHIAS KUMEFI.

SO FAR THE GHANAIAN NAVY HAS ARRESTED SIX UNAUTHORISED FOREIGN TRAWLERS. THE NEW BOATS, LIKE THOSE ALREADY IN THE FLEET, ARE FAST AND EXTREMELY MANOEUVRABLE.

AFTER THE COMMISSIONING CEREMONY THE BOATS WERE INSPECTED BY CROWDS OF ENTHUSIASTIC SIGHTSEERS WHO ASSEMBLED IN THE HARBOUR. NEWSMEN WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY WERE TAKEN ON THE THREE-HOUR CRUISE ON BOARD THE GHANA NAVY FRIGATE "KETA". THEY WERE SHOWN AROUND THE SHIP BY CAPTAIN M. FORDER.

THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT THE GHANA NAVAL BASE IN TAKORADI.

DURING THE CRUISE ONE OF THE NEWSMEN JOINED A BOAT CREW FOR A 15-MINUTE CRUISE. THE CRUISE WAS SMOOTH BUT WHEN THE BOAT CAME ALONGSIDE GNS KETA TO BE LIFTED ABOARD THE ROUGH SEA MADE THE EXERCISE DIFFICULT.
