  • Description

Anti-nuclear demonstrators assembled outside the French Embassy in London on Sunday (May 13) to begin a three week march to Paris to protest against the planned French nuclear tests in the Pacific.

About one hundred young people were at the rally which started the march. A protest note was also delivered to the French Embassy.

One of the banners carried by the marchers said "Sail the Morning Club (British Prime Minister Heath's yacht) into the nuclear zone".

The first stage of the march is from London to the south east port of Dover.

The demonstrators will then take the Channel ferry to Ostend on May 19 (next Saturday). The plan to march through Belgium and unite with contingents of Belgian and Dutch supporters.

They intend to cross into France on May 26 and are to be met on the border by protesters from many parts of France.

The French protesters will include M. Francis Stanford, Polynesian Deputy in the French National Assembly.

The march to Paris will pass through Tavery, headquarters of the French nuclear force. The demonstration is organised by Greenpeace, a committee formed in London last November to campaign against the Pacific nuclear tests.
