  • Description

CARRYING A PETITION SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET LONG, 250 WOMEN -- MEMBERS OF AN ORGANISATION CALLED WOMEN STRIKE FOR PEACE -- PICKETED THE WHITE HOUSE IN WASHINGTON ON WEDNESDAY. THE PETITION, WHICH THEY DESCRIBED AS A "MOTHERS VOTES FOR PEACE SCROLL," WAS TO BE PRESENTED TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON.

THE WOMEN'S GROUP IS URGING A COMPLETE NUCLEAR TEST BAN TREATY, A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF THE WAR IN SOUTH VIETNAM, AND CONVERSION OF THE U.S. ECONOMY FROM MILITARY TO CIVILIAN PRODUCTION. IT ALSO IS OPPOSED TO THE CREATION OF A NATO MULTI-LATERAL FORCE.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE GROUP SAID THE WOMEN WERE "DISHEARTENED" BY THE DEADLOCK IN THE GENEVA DISARMAMENT NEGOTIATIONS. "THE ENTIRE WORLD LOOKS TO GENEVA FOR HOPE", HE SAID. "NEITHER THE AMERICANS NOR THE RUSSIANS MUST BE ALLOWED TO FORGET THIS FACT."
