Background: Pierre Gemayel, the leader of the Lebanese Phalangist party, arrived back in his country a few days ago. At the airport he was met by Mr Malik, the Lebanese Foreign Minister, and many other high officials.
The Phalangist party, which is in essence the Nationalist party of the Lebanon, fully supports the official foreign policy of the country, which is friendship and collaboration with Western Europe and the United States. The slogan of the party is God, Lebanon and Family.
On this occasion Pierre Gemayel was returning from an extensive tour - by invitation - of Europe and America, to foster the ideals and aspirations of his party. In the United States he met Mr John Foster Dulles; and his visit to London was sponsored by the British Council. Gemayel also visited Paris and Rome.
It is estimated that more than 50,000 people turned out to greet Mr Gemayel on his return and to show appreciation for all he has done in fostering good relations between the Lebanon and countries abroad.
