  • Description

More than 1,500 people attended the funeral of Celestino Rebelo Teixeira in Valadares, Portugal, on sunday (4 January).

Teixeira was one of three men killed by Republican Guardsmen during a wild demonstration outside Opporto's Custoias prison on Thursday (1 January). The trouble broke out when the demonstrators tried to push through the prison gates.

They had been protesting over the 100 people detained after an abortive insurrection by left-wing military servicemen in Portugal on 25 November.

A military report said the guardsmen had been stoned before they opened fire.

On Sunday, Teixeira's body was taken from the morgue in central Opporto to the Church in Valadares, some 6 miles (13 kms) south of the city.

Wailing women followed the coffin and men gave clenched fist salutes as the cortege passed.

The second Portuguese man shot in the demonstration will be buried in Opporto on Monday (5 January). The body of the third dead man -- a 22-year old West German student -- will be flown home to be buried.
