  • Description

In Tokyo, Japan's biggest department store - the "Mitsukoshi" - organised a kimono show Oct 5 for some 200 women delegates from more than 70 countries to the International Parliamentary Union Conference in the city.

The show opened with the "New Year" kimono, usually worn for visiting during the New Year. Represented was a mother with her two girls dressed in their best kimonos, playing a kind of battledore and shuttlecock - a traditional Japanese game at the new year. These kimonos, made of silk and embroidered with gold and silver, cost up to GBP60.

Something to remember the cherry blossom festival of Japan. A kimono worn during this season - is in bright colours reminiscent of the cherry blossom and since April is warm, the kimono is lighter. A summer kimono. Aptly called "Enjoying the Cool of Evening", these summer-wear kimonos are very inexpensive - about GBP1 each.

An autumn day kimono, called "Visiting the Shrine". A mother and her three children are depicted as passing through the garden of a Shinto Shrine, dressed in their autumn day kimonos. With autumn comes the moon and the kimono called "Admire the Moon". Since a wedding is the most important social event in any girl's life, there is a fabulous wedding kimono for the occasion. It costs more than GBP100 sterling. The bridal hair style is called the "Takashimada", featuring a wig which she puts on her head only on the big day.
