England scored a thrilling 25 run win over Pakistan at Leeds today to win the three test cricket series by one match to nil. Pace bowler Peter Lever clinched the victory when he took Pakistan's last three wickets in four balls without conceding a run. Pakistan chasing a target of 231, resumed their innings this morning at 25 for no wicket and lost two wickets without adding to their total. Then from 65 to four, they recovered to 160 for four and looked in sight of victory. But they lost their last six wickets for only 45 runs.
SYNOPSIS: Pakistan, resuming their second innings at none for 25 at Leeds this morning, chasing a target of 231 for victory, were in early trouble when England captain Ray Illingworth had Aftab caught by Hobbs. If Pakistan could make the necessary runs they would have won the three test series...something they've never done before against England. But they were in even worse trouble a few balls later when Illingworth struck again...Luckhurst took the catch offered by Kahir.
Illingworth took another wicket with the score at two for 54. Mushtaq was caught close in by Edrich and Pakistan seemed to be sliding, to defeat at the hands of England's spin bowlers.
But Sadiq was still there. He seemed in no trouble as he cut to the boundary to bring up his 50. The large Pakistani contingent among the crowd were delighted.
But with his century in sight, Sadiq played a bad shot to a bad ball from D'Oliveira and was out for 91. While he was at the wicket a Pakistan victory seemed assured...but with his dismissal England quickly took control.
Illingworth took the new ball and Lever claimed the wicket of Wasim and the last two batsman to give England victory by 25 runs Lever's bowling spell yielded three wickets in four balls for no runs.
